LEGATO

Customer Challenge

Legato, which has since been acquired by EMC, was a major supplier of data backup and management software. Legato sold its products directly or via OEMs like Sun Microsystems. In 2000, Legato decided to market its flagship Networker software in Asia and France-its first venture into foreign markets.

Because Networker supports multiple platforms including Solaris, UNIX, and Windows, the localization effort involved a number of different file formats such as .rc, .property, .msg, .po, UNIX manpages, UNIX help, and Windows help.

Because of the complexity of the project, Legato wanted to select a localization vendor who understood storage technology, was capable of translating more than a million words of content, and who could provide engineering support for multiple operating systems. Localization project managers at Sun Microsystems, who had been pleased with Real Idea's professionalism and high quality work, referred Legato to Real Idea.

Real Idea Solution

Real Idea created a dedicated Legato engineering and translation team for this project, providing Legato with a single point of contact for ease of monitoring and management.

Real Idea sent the software engineers assigned to individual localization efforts to the Legato campus for product training. After training, these engineers created an environment specific to software storage that tested all localized files on the Solaris, UNIX, and Windows platforms. The environment also ensures that localized screen shots were both consistent and effective.

Results

With Real Idea as its localization partner, Legato succeeded in releasing its products simultaneously in more than five languages and in meeting its expectations for localization and project management service quality.
